Chair Fitness for Sahara
Older people from minority communities are an often forgotten group. South Asian people face cultural challenges and language barriers that impact their access to services and involvement in mainstream activities. As a result, they experience health and social inequalities – including higher levels of diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and increased risk of social isolation – which contribute to a lower quality of life.
Sahara Foundation is dedicated to helping older South Asian people make the most of later life. Based in Medway, Kent, the initiative provides opportunities for connection, fun, learning and self-empowerment by providing free social activities, health workshops, meal deliveries, information and more.
Many older adults in this group struggle to do any form of exercise at all. I work with Sahara by making chair-based Pilates classes accessible and enjoyable. They are gentle, improve mobility and flexibility, and build strength to help make things in our daily lives that bit easier.
